Element Forge is a home-based business located on Guemes Island in the scenic San Juan Islands of Washington State, USA. Almost all the work is done by me (Andy Gladish) and my sons Sam, Isaac and Joey. I also depend heavily on my wife, Jackie's, instincts. I make a great variety of designs, and she invariably points out the ones that will be popular.
Many other young and older folks are in and out of the workshop pursuing their various interests. The young men all want to make a knife or a hatchet. Joe creates oil lamps from sheets of copper. Whenever a tool or fixture is needed on the property or in our circle of friends, the tools and materials are here to be used.
The things I make in the workshop vary widely, from furniture and houseware to sculpture. I also make architectural designs, such as fountains and stair railings.
Every day brings a new challenge. For a neighbor, I recently made a wrought iron ladle from material salvaged from a WW1 shipyard that operated briefly on Guemes Island. I also just finished a wine cabinet (150 bottles) that was custom designed for a local restaurant.
