Aviation

In the summer of 1998, after a life of dreaming about learning how to fly, I signed up for flight instruction at the Port McNeill Flying Club. After about sixty hours of instruction and solo practice I received my pilot's licence in October, 1999. Since then I've flown the Club's Cessna 172 whenever I could afford the time and money - both items in chronic short supply. Ownership is not a likelihood any time soon so I have bought the plans to build a COOT Amphibian. HEY - if I can plug away for five or six years building a house an airplane should be a piece of cake, right?

Being a born-again aviation nut I found myself getting involved with anything related to flying. As well as belonging to the
Port McNeill Flying Club I joined the Civil Air Search And Rescue Association as a Spotter, with plans to progress to
Navigator and eventually a CASARA pilot when I've built up enough hours.I also found myself joining 101 Squadron, North Island,
888 (Komox) Wing of the Air Force Association of Canada.  I've been proud to be part of that vibrant group working to keep the
memories of our aviation veterans alive, and supporting the aviation community in general.  One of the projects 101 Squadron was
involved in was erecting a cairn at the crash site of a WWII Dakota near Port Hardy. We also support the Y2K Spitfire restoration
project ongoing at Comox. I donated a painting to help raise funds for that worthy project.
